A Message Regarding CensorshipThe Louisiana Library Association denounces censorship of any kind, particularly in libraries. The LLA Code of Ethics, adopted by the membership in 1981 and located in the LLA Manual, makes clear our stance: Librarians must resist all efforts by groups or individuals to censor library materials. The American Library Association also condemns censorship and clearly states through the Library Bill of Rights that restricting access to library materials is a form of censorship, stating that "Attempts to restrict access to library materials violates the basic tenets of the Library Bill of Rights". Censorship always has been and always will be antithetical to librarianship. We stand with our colleagues and library users in fighting censorship in all its forms in Louisiana libraries. | Remembering Dolly: A Champion for Children and Literacy The Louisiana Library Association joins libraries and communities across the world in mourning beloved entertainer, philanthropist, and supporter of children’s literacy, Dolly Parton. Her Imagination Library, for 31 years, has helped countless children, across the world, have access to books. From birth to age five, children can have books mailed directly to them. Those books give children an opportunity to discover the joy of reading while building early literacy skills. In honor of Dolly’s commitment to literacy. The American Library Association granted Dolly an honorary lifetime membership, recognizing her extraordinary contributions to reading and access to books. Louisiana’s libraries will miss Dolly dearly. Millions of children have discovered the magic of reading through Dolly’s kindness, generosity, and belief in the power of books. Dolly’s legacy will live on—one child, one book, and one story at a time. |
